It's been raining for what feels like 2 weeks, but is probably more like 5 days. I love a rainy day, but really, we're in sunny Florida, and it's rare that we don't see the sun AT ALL for this many days in a row. And it's Independence Day weekend, which means two whole days off. What to do? Make avocado cupcakes, of course. What could be more American than that? The recipe is from United Cakes of America by Warren Brown. I borrowed it from the library, but really want to add this wonderful cookbook to my collection. The cakes have a lot of nutmeg with fresh ground cornmeal, buttermilk, raisins and pecans (walnuts were called for, but I had a lot of pecans that mom gave me). They are wonderful with cream cheese frosting and a cup of coffee.
Then I planted the seeds, saving a few for you, Kim. We've had at least 6 inches of rain in the past few days and the plants are loving it. Several orchids decided to bloom.
It took me more time to make the written charted pattern for this bookmark than it did to knit it! I'm still learning how to use Apple's Pages. Just click on the link above for the pattern. It's free to anyone who's interested. I'm still pretty bad at making tassels. I think I may invest in one of those little tassel making tools that they sell at Joann's. I found the lace pattern for this in Barbara G. Walker's Charted Knitting Designs: a third treasury of knitting patterns . Here's the finished bookmark: From knitting From knitting Enjoy! This pretty little orchid opened this morning. With all the rain we've had, two of the three buds dropped, but at least I have one flower. This is Pot. Burana Beauty. From orchids
I'll have to knit one of these to keep for myself one day. I'm giving them all away. Here's a new lace bookmark design. I call it (actually, Wayne thought of the title) "Leaf me alone, I'm reading". We stopped by Fiber Art, Inc . last Saturday and I bought 3 more balls of Mini Mochi in different colorways. I've got enough now to knit 30 or so more bookmarks. The pattern for "Leaf me alone" is here . I'm accumulating quite an assortment of bookmarks of all kinds. The Ephemera Society of America posts an article on the history of bookmarks . Yet another collection. Add it to the dragons (I will post about them, eventually), orchids, skulls...can't leave out the knitting yarn, needles, and patterns (those seem to multiply like breeding rabbits!). I have bookmarks in two books I'm reading now: Aimee Bender's The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake , and The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year Volume Four . ...
In 2009, we built a small koi pond. Last year we made it bigger. It's about 300 gallons and is home to our one koi, Moby. We have a good filter system, but lacked a clarifier. Thanks to my brother, Paul, who sent an Amazon gift certificate for Christmas, we were able to buy a TotalPond UV Clarifier for the pond. Wayne installed it a week ago. What a difference! Here's what the pond looked like before: (except without the carrots, and not as yummy). The filter was easy to install and will fit 1/2, 3/4, or 1 inch filter hose. We chose to install it outside the pond just in back of the waterfall. It can also be submerged. It will be hidden by plants behind the pond. It has an indicator light that glows blue to let you know it's working. In just one day the pond was a lot clearer, you could just see Moby. Today, just 5 days after installation, the water is almost completely clear. Moby can now see us and tries to hide...
